Spell for Pride. Compete for Your Cause.
The Columbiapedia Spelldown brings together Columbia’s nonprofit community for a high-energy spelling competition where skill, strategy, and a little hometown pride take center stage.
Twelve (12) 501©3 nonprofit organizations will compete. Each organization will choose a local celebrity representative — a familiar face, community leader, or personality — to step up to the mic and spell on their behalf.
It’s strategy, it’s community, and yes… it’s a little bit of nostalgia. So brush off those language arts skills!
How It Works
The competition follows a traditional spelling bee format, featuring standard spelling bee words that will challenge even the strongest spellers.
12 nonprofit teams compete
Each team is represented by one local celebrity speller
Words follow a traditional spelling bee format (no gimmicks — just skill)
3 judges will confirm the correct spelling of each contestant
Top 3 teams earn first, second, and third place honors and ($2,500, $1,000, and $500 respectively)
The Tiebreaker Twist
If competitors are tied or need a second chance to stay in the game, we introduce a Columbia-inspired twist.
Teams will be given one opportunity to answer a Columbia-based trivia question as a tiebreaker. It’s your moment to prove not just what you can spell — but how well you know the city.
Why It Matters
This isn’t just about spelling — it’s about community visibility, connection, and pride.
Participating nonprofits will:
Spotlight their mission in front of a live audience
Partner with a well-known local representative
Compete for recognition and prizes
Be part of a signature Columbia event that celebrates the city in a fresh, engaging way
